Working with images in Microsoft Word – Inline or Floating

Note: This post is written for Word 2013. The concepts apply to earlier versions of Word but the procedures and user interface will be slightly different.

Placing images in a Word document can be a frustrating experience. They sometimes seem to move around the page at random or text wraps around images in unexpected ways.

The behavior of images depends on how you place them in the document. Word has two methods for placing images, inline and floating. Open-source alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud

It has been almost a year since Adobe stopped offering Creative Suite software as perpetual licenses and moved it all to the cloud in the form of a subscription service. If you use Creative Suite—now Creative Cloud—regularly, it’s a good deal. But if you use drawing, desktop-publishing, and photo-editing software only once in a while, Creative Cloud is a tad expensive.

Fortunately, Corel and Quark still offer licensed software, so there are options. But before you go out and buy new tools, why not try some open-source alternatives first.
